The Sharp Edge 2017

Picture
Robin Sharp is a chartered civil engineer, lives in Ditton Green and is vice chairman of the Parish Council.  Robin has kindly offered to write a regular piece for the Woodditton website based on his experience of living in Woodditton, and undoubtedly talking to his fellow villages over a soft drink...

The opinions are entirely his own.

"Seven months have slipped by since my last report, but quite a lot has happened in that time. I will start with a recent controversial planning issue centred on a local public house."

The Three Blackbirds

We welcome the reopening of the refurbished Blackbirds Inn. The new owners are consulting neighbours and the council on further improvements and developments and encourage either direct feedback (theblackbirdsinn.com) or via your local councillors (woodditton.org.uk). Local support will help maintain their local success.

 Planning

A further attempt to build on the chicken field in Ditton Green has been dismissed at appeal, the Inspector considered it to be a valuable open space. The future use for this land is currently unknown

Telephone boxes

Our telephone box libraries in School Road and Ditton Green continue to be well used. We are considering following other councils who have located defibrillator devices in theirs.

Bonfire Night

The future of these previously successful events is unknown at present, pending a decision on a new location and offers of a project manager and volunteer helpers.

Highway Safety Improvements

Our bid for funding for village gateway treatments fell just under the required ranking for success this year. The parish council may decide to fund the required £4500 from our Community Infrastructure Levy grants.

Neighbourhood Watch

We are delighted that Katie Craddock has reactivated the neighbourhood watch scheme in the Stetchworth Road / Ditton Green areas. All local residents not already registered to receive regular valuable news reports are encouraged to contact Katie (See village notice board)

Street Lighting Renewal

The County Council will shortly be replacing most of the street lights in our parish. Although they plan to broadly replace like with like, the new units will be more    efficient, provide a different kind of light and will dim over night. Lamp column   positions may change and there may be less of them. Detailed proposals are awaited, but we want to be involved in final decision making on appearance and locations. We must also consider the condition of our own parish council units, which will not be included in the scheme.

Miscellaneous Items

I have been chasing Openreach to replace the badly damaged fibre cabinet atthe Woodditton crossroads and our MP Lucy Frazer is now assisting. It shouldhappen soon.

Please report any highway faults via the Cambs County Council web site(Cambridgeshire.gov.uk –

Report a Highways Fault). It is a very user friendlysite and I have reported a number of pot holes and a fallen tree recently, whichhave been rapidly dealt with. Our telephone box libraries in School Road and Ditton Green continue to bewell used. We are considering following other councils who have locateddefibrillator devices in theirs.
